Upon completion of this program, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the factors affecting the newborn's condition.
- Discuss the four stages of fetal development, and the corresponding lung development.
- Discuss surfactant production and the importance of the L/S ratio.
- Obtain a pertinent maternal history and recognize the risk factors associated with maternal conditions.
- Discuss the transition from fetal to newborn circulation.
- Assess the infant using the APGAR scoring system.
- Assess the infant using the NRP guidelines.
- Demonstrate proper techniques for resuscitating the infant using the NRP guidelines.
- Recognize signs of different newborn infant respiratory distress patterns.
