What is occupational therapy?

Infant OT clientOccupational therapy uses purposeful activities, including the tasks of daily life, to promote the greatest possible functional independence for people who are dealing with the effects of disease, injury, birth defects, disability or developmental delay.

Occupational therapy can help infants and children achieve — to the greatest extent possible — the self-help, play and learning skills appropriate for their age or developmental ability.

What can the SHP Pediatric Occupational Therapy Clinic offer its young clients?

The Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science Pediatric Clinic is a student-administered service provided under the direct supervision of a licensed occupational therapist. The clinic is designed to provide consultation, evaluation, individual treatment and/or specialized group treatment.

Services for children may include

  • Improving motor development, self-concept, play skills and emotional maturation
  • Promoting age-appropriate independence in daily living skills
  • Designing, fabricating and applying assistive technology devices and services
  • Adapting the environment to allow increased independence

What are some conditions that might bring a client to the clinic?

  • Developmental delay
  • Developmental disabilities, including cognitive delays, spina bifida, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy
  • Sensory processing difficulties
  • Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and related disorders
  • Delayed or impaired motor development
  • Orthopedic disabilities, traumatic injuries, burns and amputations
  • Emotional disturbance or behavioral challenges
  • Cancer
  • Autism spectrum disorders

Clinic mission

  • Develop partnerships with families, other health and/or support providers and interested parties related to the care of children and their families
  • Provide a safe and enriching therapeutic experience for children
  • Assist students with development of clinical competency that supports research-based practice in pediatric occupational therapy services
  • Address and mind, body and spirit of all children and their families

The Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science Pediatric Clinic is located in Lewis Hall on the University of Missouri campus.
