Have you ever had an X-ray taken or blood drawn and sent to a lab for further examination? If so, you’ve had an imaging or diagnostic test performed. These procedures can help diagnose a sprained ankle, confirm a response to a drug therapy, determine what kind of stroke a patient may have had, locate a potential life-saving organ donor and more.
Medical imaging uses a variety of techniques to look inside the human body. It’s often one of the first steps in making an initial diagnosis or confirming a diagnosis. Diagnostic procedures may require taking a sample of blood, tissues or body fluids from a person and then running complex tests to find out what’s wrong. These techniques have also been at the forefront of understanding how our bodies work. Health care has made huge strides in the last century thanks to the technological advances made in diagnostic sciences.
Mizzou’s School of Health Professions offers degree programs in the following diagnostic and medical imaging fields: clinical laboratory science, diagnostic medical ultrasound, nuclear medicine and radiography.
