Respiratory therapists assist in the diagnosis, treatment and management of newborn to geriatric patients with pulmonary disorders. They conduct and interpret tests to diagnose impaired lung function and are responsible for assessing, evaluating and modifying treatment. These therapists consult, educate and advise a variety of individuals including physicians, other health care providers, the community and the patient.
Respiratory therapists may work in hospitals, nursing homes, physician labs, for home health care providers or in sales of durable medical equipment and pharmaceuticals. Graduates may assume leadership positions within these organizations and conduct research.
This is a four-year degree with two years of prerequisites and two years in the professional program.
