Pre-Physical Therapy student Aimee Murray was recently selected for one of the 2012-2013 Oustanding Discovery Fellow Awards by the Honors College. In addition, she was just notified that she has been selected for continuing funding for her project for the 2013-2014 year. The Honors College Discovery Fellows program is a highly competitive award and an excellent opportunity for a student to participate in a funded/paid research experience. Murray’s research team includes Katie Mocca, also a pre-PT student, and faculty mentors Erin Dannecker, Victoria Shaffer and Allison Kabel. Check out their project abstract below:
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability in the United States and its prevalence increases with aging. Pain is the primary problem for OA patients and pain relief is a primary goal of OA treatments. Regular physical activity decreases OA pain over time so it is included in clinical practice treatment guidelines for OA. However, therapeutic exercise for OA can acutely increase pain. Therefore, people with OA must decide if activity-related pain indicates that it is safe or harmful to continue the activity. Fear and avoidance of activity are frequent complaints from people with OA. A few studies support that controlled exposures to threatening physical activities decrease fear and avoidance, but many knowledge gaps exist. For example, the mechanisms of exposure therapy and the most effective exposure therapy protocols are unknown. The long-term goal of this proposal is to develop a strategic line of research to systematically (1) clarify the relationships among physical activity and activity-related pain, fear, and harm and (2) increase physical activity in older patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain.

SHP advisors, Teresa Briedwell and Matt Augeri were recently recognized for their excellence in advising. Several peers and students nominated the two recipients because of their hard work and dedication to the school.
Teresa said being an advisor is, “easy for me because I get to talk about something that I love.” Part of what Teresa does is meet with potential students, talk with current students about the path they need to take to apply for PT school, inform potential students about what physical therapists do as well as act as an informational and motivational guide to help students figure out what they want to do in the future. Teresa said, “It is an honor to be nominated and selected for the award. I feel fortunate when I can work in a capacity where I can do what I love.”
For Matt, the most enjoyable aspect of being an advisor is working directly with the students. He enjoys making students feel like Mizzou is the best place they can learn and have an opportunity to follow their dreams and aspirations. Along with being an advisor, Matt is very involved with SHP outside of the advising setting. Matt is a TA, works with Phi Epsilon Kappa and is also involved with the mentoring program.
Congratulations to these two great SHP faculty and staff award recipients.

To commemorate World Autism Awareness Day and Autism Awareness Month, Mizzou joined Autism Speaks in a global movement to “Light It Up Blue.” Buildings around the world – landmarks, hotels, sports venues, concert halls, museums, bridges, and hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses were shining blue lights on April 2.
At Mizzou, students, faculty and staff wore blue and had a blue balloon release at the columns to raise autism awareness.
Thank you to everyone who showed their support for this great cause!

FourWinds is Mizzou’s health professions learning community, and last week they hosted a health and wellness fair to help introduce students to different kinds of health careers. SOTA members attended the fair to explain what occupational therapy is all about! They demonstrated some adaptive equipment to help students understand what a person in occupational therapy might go through. They also completed a mini ergonomics assessment for students by helping them understand how their posture at a desk could be contributing to joint damage or pain in the future. Last month we told SHP student Jean Taylor’s weight loss story.
Aren’t you just dying to know the results of the Ship Shape Challenge? Jean won 2nd place! In terms of votes, Jean won by a landslide, but the Ideal Shape company makes the final decision for who wins first place and receives the 7-day cruise. Jean is very excited to have won 2nd place and receive $1000 as a reward. She said, “I really want to thank all of you who supported me in any way.”
Congratulations Jean!

Senior Health Sciences Major, Jean Taylor, lost 100 pounds and now has the chance to win big.
When walking to class and climbing all the stairs on campus made Jean drained and winded, she decided to make some lifestyle changes and start a weigh-loss program called Ideal Shape.
Along with meal replacement shakes, the program comes with Brain Training CDs which helped Jean focus on her personal “ideal shape” rather than BMI or the scale. This, along with exercise, helped Jean kick start her new physical and mental lifestyle which lead her to where she is today.
She entered Ideal Shape’s Ship Shape Challenge essay contest in September to convince others they can meet their health goals, and became the month’s winner. Now it’s time for the final challenge where all of the monthly winners’ essays compete for the most votes. The three contestants with the most votes will win cash prizes and the first place winner gets a Caribbean cruise along with a cash prize.
Voting begins November 1st! “Like” Ideal Shape’s FaceBook page to see before and after pictures of the contestants and, of course, vote.

Congratulations Jean! Your SHP family is very proud of you!

On Saturday, October 6 the Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound program at Mizzou SHP hosted an alumni reunion celebrating TEN years as a program! In attendance was one member of the original class, and guests from all the classes up to today. The group enjoyed reconnecting over pancakes and sausage and were on hand for a short presentation by Dean Richard Oliver. Thanks to everyone who attended, and all those who were here in spirit. We’re looking forward to many more decades of DMU education here at Mizzou SHP!
If you missed it, check out all the photos from the event on Facebook!

Graduate student, Kate McIntyre, will have two posters on display at the Missouri Public Health Association Conference this week.
Kate got involved through an internship for her dual degree program with the MPH program and the School of Journalism. Combining health promotion and education with her event planning and communication experience to improve health outcomes, she decided, would be a great use of her time.
The conference will host a mix of more than 160 public health practitioners, policy advocates, higher education professionals and students from throughout the state. Along with a list of activities and speakers, twenty posters will be in display, two of which are Kate’s.
Kate’s internship enables her to work closely with Susan G. Komen Foundation outreach, and to increase breast cancer awareness among African American women in Columbia and Jefferson City. Here is one of her posters that will be on display. Great job Kate!

On Sunday, July 15, Occupational Therapy students from SHP hosted “All Skate,” an inclusive skating event for families with members with disabilities. OT volunteers were on hand to assist participants and wheelchairs, strollers, wagons, rolling walkers and other assistive devices were welcome on the rink floor.
More than 50 volunteers and participants made the event a huge success – one that OT students hope to repeat in the near future. Check out the event coverage on KOMU!
And we’re posting a photo slideshow as well. It certainly looks like a good time was had by all! Click to view slideshow.

The Mizzou SHP Respiratory Therapy Program hosted the first of 2 asthma camps this weekend – this one in Potosi. Check out these pictures – a good time was definitely had by all!
Click to view slideshow. The concept behind “Camp Catch-Ya-Breath” is that the camp is FREE for kids with moderate to severe asthma, and is staffed by volunteer health professionals who make sure the kids have a safe camp experience. For most of the kids involved, this camp is their only chance to have a “camp” experience because their asthma makes it too difficult or dangerous to attend a regular summer camp. In addition to fun camp activities like swimming, hiking and crafts, campers learn disease management strategies to help them feel more in control of their lives and their illness. This weekend’s camp in Potosi was hosted in partnership with Washington County Memorial Hospital. The next camp is June 29-July 1 in Columbia. Visit Mizzou SHP Respiratory Therapy online for more information.
